Traveling during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment can be daunting—but with the right preparation, it's absolutely doable. Whether you're traveling for a work trip, family event, or simply getting a change of scenery, it's important to know how to properly store, transport, and protect your fertility medications.

Traveling in the middle of an IVF cycle can be overwhelming.

At Grain Fertility, we support patients through every phase of treatment, including planning for life on the go. Below are some essential IVF travel tips to help you feel more confident and in control.

Double-Check Medication Storage Instructions

Every medication in your IVF protocol may have different storage requirements. Some need refrigeration, while others must be kept at room temperature.

Before your trip:

  • Review the instructions provided by your clinic or pharmacy.

  • Ask your care team or one of our Patient Empowerment Coaches if you’re unsure.

  • Make a list of what needs to stay cold, and what should be stored away from heat or light.

Use a Travel Cooler and Monitor Temperatures

If you're bringing medications that need to stay cold (like certain injectables), pack them in a reliable travel cooler with reusable ice packs.

Tips for keeping meds safe:

  • Use a digital or stick-on thermometer to track the internal temperature.

  • Avoid freezing—medications should stay cold, but not too cold.

  • Replenish ice packs as needed on long trips or layovers.

Protect Room-Temperature Meds from Heat

Medications that don’t require refrigeration can still degrade if exposed to high temperatures.

What to do:

  • Keep these meds out of direct sunlight.

  • Don’t leave them in a hot car, especially in the summer.

  • Use an insulated pouch to help regulate the temperature if needed.

Be Prepared for TSA and Airport Security

Fertility medications are allowed in carry-on bags, but TSA may ask for additional details.

Here’s how to get through security smoothly:

  • Keep medications in their original packaging.

  • Carry a printed copy of your prescription or a letter from your clinic.

  • Ice packs are permitted—just declare them at screening.

  • Let the agent know you’re carrying medical supplies.

Grain Fertility Tip: Pack medications in your carry-on, not your checked bag, to avoid lost luggage and temperature issues.
